sneak peek

Thanks, Kim, for letting me put these on here! Enjoy!

encyclopedia of our ordinary life

Amy & Kev, circa Jan, 1999. I loved that Pleather coat.
My roommate stole it later that year. :(

So, since today is our 9th anniversary, I decided to post a little bit from a scrapbook I'm doing called Encyclopedia of Our Ordinary Life. It's an idea I came across from a book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal by a similar title and I thought it was a great way to tell our story. (okay, cue the sappy music). It's basically an alphabetical list of things describing one or both of us, things we like and/or dislike, etc. The entire scrapbook is rather large so in the interest of time and saving you all from boredom I'll only post some of the letters here. Happy Anniversary to us!!

B -- Bed-time movies: I am almost completely unable to fall asleep without first zoning out to the tv. I know, there's tons to be said for and against this and everyone has an opinion about having a tv in the bedroom but rather than laying there and trying to shut off my mind from all the days' happenings I've found that the best thing for me to fall asleep is to put on an old episode of the Dick Van Dyke show on DVD and I'm usually almost asleep before the episode is over.

C -- Cotton Balls: Sometime you should throw a cotton ball at Kev and see what happens. He has the most bizarre phobia. He absolutely cannot stand the sound they make when you tear them apart. Really, really funny.

Amy and Kev, shortly after meeting.
The first weekend he took me home to see his parents, circa Sept. 1998

D -- Dave Matthews Band: Both of us LOVE THIS BAND!! When I was preggo with Gennie I played these CD's exclusively in my car on the way to and from work everyday and when she was a few months old we happened to turn it on and she smiled and flapped her arms like crazy.
F -- Forehead Butt: Somewhere along the line Kev discovered that when I frown I get a crease in my forehead that looks like a butt crack. Fantastic. And he delights in reminding me of it especially when I'm mad at him. (poke, poke, "you've got a forehead butt!") Charming.

K -- Kids: One of the biggest things we had in common when we met was how much we both wanted kids. He was really excited to be a dad someday and I love that about him. We both agree that we may not ever have much money but we will always take time for the kids. N -- Noodles: Given the choice of just about any kind of food in the world, Kev will pick pasta. Any type, any shape, topped with any sauce. As long as they aren't the spinach flavor ones.

R -- Rubber Ducky Socks: Yes, in lieu of traditional wedding footwear, I chose blue socks with tiny rubber duckies all over them for my trek down the aisle. I thought they went nicely with the stacked white tennis shoes I wore them in.

S -- Stove: One, sacrificed in the name of husband/wife communication. :)
There's a taste of our life. It's been a great 9 years and I can't wait for what's in store in the years to come!

i hate technology + fabulous news

Anyway, about Gennie's news. She made the most important decision of her entire life a week ago when she decided to pray and ask Jesus to forgive her sins and be her Savior!! We could not possibly be more proud! My mom gave her a tiny booklet about how God love us (basically a Plan of Salvation for kids) that she was going to use this year for our Vacation Bible School and Gennie had us read it to her several nights before she went to bed. The last page had a little prayer written out for kids to follow to ask Jesus to forgive them and she was very interested in it but when Kev asked her a couple times if she wanted to pray the prayer with our help she said "not tonite, but maybe sometime." Then on June 29 she came into the front room after she got ready for bed, tossed the booklet to Kev and said "Okay, so I want to pray the prayer tonite." Wahoo! The three of us read thru the booklet again and then helped her say the words and she asked Jesus into her heart! We made a big deal of it for her and wrote the date and info in her little bible. Very exciting!

I have a whole mess of photos from what we've been up to this summer just waiting to be edited and posted on here so as soon as my "work stuff" is done I'll be all over those getting them on here for your viewing pleasure. Highlights include a zillion trips to the park with friends, water play, VBS this week, tons of work in the backyard getting ready for Josiah's 2nd birthday in 2 weeks, etc. Oh, and a particularly funny set showing our newest attempt at keeping Josiah from hurting himself.

Soon!

limping along

so, our computer is seriously in trouble. not like, "ooooo, you're so busted!!" but like, on it's last legs. we've been trying to hold out until windows 7 comes out so we don't have to mess with vista - we dealt with windows ME a few years back and have no intention of reliving that atrocity - but it's been really bad this last week and I even got the "blue screen of death" that means it's dangerously close to stopping altogether. i let it sit over the weekend and was able to boot it up this morning but i'm scared to put anymore photos on it until kev has a chance to crash it on purpose and reinstall everything.

for now i'm backing up everything in at least 6 different places and praying that i have enough time to proof out several photo shoots I've done in the last few days. i'll be back soon with photos of what we're up to, including some exciting news from Gennie about her eternity!

wow, i'm surprised it let me type this posssssss sssss sssssstt tt tttt *%&^ $# &* ( (& ^(&

a haiku.

Callous parade folk
Ambling through my clean front yard -
Don't puke on my grass!

Flaming Gorge Days is this weekend and the parade was this morning. We're one block down from the parade route; much closer than we were at the trailer.

Nothing like spending the morning watching drunk people enjoy a parade.

Happy weekend!
(Thanks to Cathy Zielske for the haiku inspiration!)

about today.

TODAY
June 23, 2009

Outside my window... The sun is decidedly out, finally.
I am thinking... about how much I hate Walmart and really don't want to go there today.
I am thankful for... a ton of stuff, both little and big.
From the kitchen... last night was Breakfast for Supper, eaten wherever you can find a spot to sit. I'm much more relaxed about sitting at the kitchen table during the summer.
Tonight, I'm thinking something quick before the softball game, maybe chicken caesar salad?
I am wearing... capri jeans, and surprisingly not freezing my buns off.
I am creating... a grocery list, which is not what I'd rather be creating right now.
I am going... to gather the kids and head out; let's get the horror over with so we can come home.
I am reading... the Amazon listing for Fool by Chrisopher Moore. It's a spoof of the story of King Lear and I can't wait until it makes its way to our little pathetic library, or at least into the state library system so I can request it. The last one of his books I requested made the librarian blush when I told her the title: Island of the Sequined Love Nun - a completely harmless fiction story about organ harvesting.
I am hoping... that Kev has a safe trip to Riverton for the mtgs tomorrow. I hate it when he has to leave, except that I can make a HUGE mess with my scrap stuff and don't have to pick it up until I hear the car return to the driveway. Hee hee.
I am hearing... Kopper bark at nothing in the backyard. Darn annoying dog.
Around the house... there is the faint sound of Handy Manny from the front room.
One of my favorite things... is summer. Period.
A few plans for the rest of the week... straighten the house for home group tomorrow night; scrap as much as I can and make as big a mess as I want; clean up the house again for Kev to come home; help Kev install the sprinkler system when he returns this weekend; occasionally feed/clothe/chat with the kids (just kidding about the "occasionally" part - this is probably the most likely one to happen on this list.)

Happy Tuesday!

weekend activities

So, last weekend I shot my first wedding of the season. It was a beautiful event . . . even when the skies opened up and gave us Wyoming's version of a hurricane. Seriously, I've never been in wind and rain swirling around like that in my life. It didn't deter the couple, tho, and they were willing to work with me to get the pictures they wanted. Instead of shooting at a beautiful park, we had to use the entryway of the event center during the reception . . . all rock and angled glass and fire alarm boxes on the wall. Kev shot with me and I think we got all the photos we wanted but it sure stretched my creativity.

And as if our hurricane wasn't enough excitement for the day, we hit our first deer on the way home. The wedding was in Kemmerer (no, that's not a typo, that's really how it's spelled) which is about an hour away, depending on the road construction, and my parents kept the kids for us so Kev could come - I'm always better at a wedding when he's there, if for no other reason than for someone to talk to during the down times. Anyway, as we were getting back on the highway to come home, there was this U-Haul in front of us on the on-ramp who suddenly slammed on its brakes and swerved. I remember thinking, "What's the deal with them?" just as I saw this deer streaking across the road. I screamed . . . which I'm sure was the most helpful thing I could do . . . and Kev slammed on the brakes but we still hit it. The thunk was deafening, as if we had run thru the whole herd, but when he got out to see the damage there was no more than a small indention in the bumper maybe 3 inches long. No fur, no cracks, no blood. I looked back to see if the deer made it and I could see it running up the hillside, without so much as a limp. Chances are it collapsed and died later, but I'd like to think it scampered up the hill and back to its home having learned its lesson about playing in traffic.

It took us 5 whole years to hit one. And that's not counting the 5 years I lived in MT where they treat the highway as just another part of the prairie and cross at will. But now that it's happened we don't have to worry about that "first hit" anymore. Kind of like the first scratch in the bed of a new pickup. Once it's there, you don't have to worry about who's gonna scratch it first.
